Database Setup Fails Connecting to Existing Database

I have a new Sharepoint 2010 environment and am trying to setup the database by connecting to an existing database.  It fails with the well known 'error: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified'.  I can use use SQL Server Managment Studio to connect to the instance remotely using the farm account.  I can see the connections in the firewall logs with no drops.  I do have the SQL Browser turned off and the SQL service is accepting connections on a non-default port.  I am entering the database server as <servername\instance,port#>.  Can Nintex interpret this connection string or does the browser have to be turned on?

     Thanks,

    hockera
